The Portland Salon

A PLACE TO ASK LIFE'S BIG QUESTIONS
... AND WRESTLE IN THE MUD WITH THEM

WE Value curiositY, INTELLECTUAL BRAVERY & Play

THE NEXT SALON Topic:

The Future of Cognition

At a time when video, AI, and parasocial media are reshaping how we think and relate,
this salon meets to think through what’s changing beneath it all:
an exploration of the future of sense-making, understanding and affiliation.

THE FIT

We take ideas seriously and take ourselves lightly — because rigorous thinking thrives with curiosity and good humor.

We expect that smart people will disagree — and welcome it.

We privilege thinking together — not signaling belonging or performing certainty. We value clarity over consensus and exploration over comfort.

The mood is festive, insightful and sharp and we hope that you leave feeling energized and with a new friend or two.

WHAT TO EXPECT

You’ll arrive uncertain and leave with fresh perspectives and new connections.

The salon is intimate — one table, one conversation — and structured, but not rigid.

Each evening centers on one big idea. That idea is approached through 3–5 pointed subtopics, which can be used by the facilitator to guide, deepen, or redirect conversation as needed. We don’t aim to “cover” everything. We prioritize depth and engagement.

Participants receive the theme and subtopics at least two weeks in advance. Optional reading may be provided, but preparation is never required.

Logistics & Attendance

The Salon is small by design. If you RSVP, we ask that you treat it as a real commitment. If plans change, please let us know as soon as possible — ideally a week in advance — so another guest has a fair chance to attend.

The evening begins with a simple meal, often soup or stew, with bread. Attendees are invited to bring a bottle of wine or beverage to share. If you have dietary restrictions, let me (Rebecca) know and I’ll tell you whether we can accommodate.

The salon takes place in inner NE Portland (private residence, details shared with attendees).

Commonsense Rules

You are here to participate.
Ask questions. Take positions. Contribute actively.

  • Disagreement is encouraged. Disrespect is not.

  • The salon is not a debate. There are no winners. If you try to “win” an argument while missing the heart of the discussion, you may be called out.

  • Don’t dominate the room

  • Do not perform expertise or outsource judgment by appealing to authority as a substitute for thinking

  • The salon is a digital light space. Group lookups are fine when useful; solo scrolling is not.

Facilitation is offered with a light hand.
Questioning the facilitator is welcome.
